Lyon County and the city of Emporia are divided into three major districts, each overseen by a County Commissioner.

By law, the Board of County Commissioners are required to manage county property, examine and settle all accounts of the receipts and expenses of the county, oversee roads and bridges, contract for the protection and promotion of public health and welfare, and perform such other duties as are or may be prescribed by law.
